Must Have’s For Your DIY Tile Job

Let's talk about some of my go-to supplies for do-it-yourself backsplash and tile!

All you need to get started is:

So for the cost of the basic tools and supplies (if you mix yourself) minus the tile cost for approximately $60-$75.00 and you are ready to go!

Are you excited yet? Tiling is not hard. It just takes a little practice, as it’s a learned skill. No natural talent is required! Can you do puzzles, good with your hands, or like assembling things? Then tiling might be your jam!

I’ve gotten really cool tile for anywhere from $0.49/ft or $1.00/ft buying clearance or overstock. If the cost of the tile isn’t an issue, just buy what you like. Keep in mind busy patterns and smaller tiles will be a little “fussier” and more work for a beginner.

Tile adhesives have many types and styles available, I like Mastic (Acrylpro is a common brand) for walls (not appropriate for shower floors) as it’s sticky and the tiles don’t tend to slide. Thinset or Versabond are also common brands. These come premixed in buckets ready to use or are much less expensive in a bag like concrete would come in. You mix it with water to the consistency of buttercream frosting and apply.

Now….the Tile Saw is where we lose most people…did you know You Can Rent a Small Tile Saw for less than $30/day? If you are afraid of power tools, don’t be. They are easy to use and with standard safety precautions, they are very safe.

A midsize tile on a pre-glued sheet is perfect for a beginner. Really nervous? They have a sticky pad you can apply right to the wall and apply your tile to that with no adhesives or trowel needed! Keep in mind this convenience comes at a heavy financial cost. It worked for me when I did my very first tile job many, many moons ago. So just do what feels good to you to get started, you can improve and expand as you go!

An average person can tile their bathroom or kitchen backsplash for very little cost and wow, can it change the look of a place! Couple that with updated paint and holy cow, look out!
